Daniel's story: "Having a sense of purpose is uplifting"

At 36 years old, Daniel had never had a job. He lived with anxiety problems and a fear of change. He wanted to be employed but his psychiatrist had warned it was a big step to take for someone with such complex health issues.

Daniel was determined though, and after a recommendation from Step-Up (Wakefield Council’s Employment and Skills Service) he found himself turning to Hopeful Families’ Groundwork initiative.

His aim was to be able to complete a Forklift Truck (FLT) course; “I felt that would give me hope and a target to work to,” he says.

“My psychiatrist advised me to take things one step at a time, so I was looking for those small steps to help me progress towards looking for a job.”

Hope and positive reinforcement

Daniel secured funding from Hopeful Families which allowed him to take the course. He was also supported and shown ways to get closer to his goal.

Pluss’s Hopeful Families programme provides support for people like David who are not in work or have a range of barriers holding them back. Each person is assigned a family mentor to explore their circumstances and put measure in place to tackle those barriers.

Hopeful Families gave me hope and positive reinforcement, I felt upskilled after achieving my FLT certificate. I even did my own CV which would have been a massive task without their help. My mood has lifted and having a sense of purpose is uplifting

And Daniel says he would definitely recommend the service: “I even made a recommendation to my son. The support is really helpful, and my mentor was a good listener.

“My aims were taken at my pace. I excelled and now I have a job. I am really pleased.

“Thank you for all you’ve done.”
