When Julian was made redundant during the Covid pandemic, he soon realised his lack of IT skills was going to be a huge challenge in finding a new job.
After three years of working for a food production company, and previously as a school cleaner and kitchen porter, Julian realised he didn’t have the technical equipment or know-how that many others take for granted.
He had no laptop, no smart phone and no digital skills.
“It’s not funny having to pedal into town every day to job seek and then, during lockdown, there was no way or hope of securing work.”
Seeking future employment
Sixty-five-year-old Julian turned to Positive People Somerset for help and was teamed up with Change Coach Gill Gillott from the Abri Employment Service.
Positive People were able to provide Julian with the IT equipment he needed to set him back on his journey to employment.
They also arranged for him to have some vocational training at Bridgwater and Taunton College and provided coaching on effective job seeking.
“The Positive People programme provided me with the equipment and training to be able to confidently seek work independently,” says Julian.
Because of lockdowns, digital skills were essential for Julian to find a new role and, in a little over a year since he was made redundant, he was offered a position with Busy Bee Cleaning Services.
“I’m over the moon,” he says. “It’s a full-time position and comes with a company car, providing me with more security and a better financial future.
“The skills and help provided by the Positive People programme mean I can now look forward to maintaining employment in the future.”
