Amy’s story: “I now have the determination to succeed”

Pluss Positive People Positive People - West Yorkshire 23 September 2021

After spending several years raising her son, Amy, 32, who lives in the Hemsworth area, near Wakefield, decided it was time to return to work now her son had started secondary school. Amy joined the Hopeful Families programme, with Groundwork and was appointed a family mentor who would work with Amy throughout her time on the programme.

Finding that work-life balance

Understandably after a such a long period away from work, Amy lacked some confidence, which impacted her self-esteem. She wanted to return to work in the beauty treatments sector and wanted to start her own business. This would give Amy some control and a level of flexibility over her work-life balance. A priority was to refresh her skills and obtain an up-to-date qualification.

Following an assessment of skills and experience and what opportunities existed, a specialist eyelash course, ‘Russian Eyelashes’, was found that would give Amy a qualification she needed to be able to provide this treatment.

Amy was also given support and guidance on self-employment and access to relevant enterprise schemes in her local area.

Anxious times

Around the time when Amy joined Hopeful Families, the Covid-19 virus was emerging and shortly after the UK went into a national ‘lockdown’. It was unclear initially if the course would go ahead. This caused further anxiety, however thankfully, the course went ahead as planned.

Amy commented: “At first I was anxious things would be put on hold, so it really boosted my confidence knowing it was happening and I was so pleased that I passed the course.

“My family mentor, Debbie, gave me belief and always listened to me. Through working with me, she gave me inspiration and the determination which helped to build my confidence.”

Looking ahead to a new, bright future

When asked what difference Hopeful Families has made, Amy replied: “I now feel confident and have the determination to succeed. Gaining a qualification has enabled me to get back into the beauty industry and I’ve reached my goal of starting my own business. None of this would’ve been possible without the support from Debbie and the Hopeful Families programme.

“I’ve loved my time on the programme and I’d highly recommend it. You are just brilliant!”

Amy’s new beauty treatments business, specialising in eyelash treatments began trading in May 2021.
