David's story: Facing facts

Pluss Positive People - West Yorkshire 27 June 2022
David's story

Thirty-three-year-old, David, admits to coming from a ‘troubled’ background. “I was an alcoholic, a drug addict, I was in a lot of trouble.

“My life was out of control, and I was desperate to get out. I had to face facts that I couldn’t overcome this on my own.”

In realising he needed some help and support, David had taken the first step to taking back control of his life.

He was referred to Pluss’ Hopeful Families where he was teamed up with Jane, a family mentor at one of our partner organisations; Groundwork.

“Jane helped me through this tough time,” he says. “She was the one who found out about Reflections (a drug addiction treatment centre) and has given me the lifeline I needed.”

David gave up everything he knew at the time and went to live in the rehabilitation centre, and although it was tough, he persevered and is thankful for all the support.

“I’m so grateful for Hopeful Families coming into my life – they are such a blessing,” he says.

Clean and sober

David is proud to say he is no longer using drugs or drinks and he feels so much happier because of that: “I’ve completed a college course in forestry and I’m now undertaking a course helping teenagers to recognise the dangers of drug use and knife crime.

“I would never have imagined my life could be like this and it’s all thanks to Jane and Hopeful Families!”

David is now looking forward to the future.

“I aim to stay clean and do more college courses,” he says. “And I’d like to go even further as a mentor, helping to spread the message to the younger generation about the dangers of guns, knives and drugs. And that’s just what I’m going to do!”

We love your positivity, David, and we are proud to have been a part of your journey. 😃
